Eugenol is a phenol found in oil of cloves, pimento and other oils. It is a colorless or slight yellowish and optically inactive liquid with an odor of cloves and a pungent spicy taste. Eugenol should be kept in a well stopper bottles and protected from the light. It is soluble in all proportions of alcohol, ether, chloroform or glacial acetic acid.

Application
Eugenol is an antiseptic and is not toxic. It has some local anesthetic properties also and is a useful solvent of other local anesthetics, such as pure or erythrophleine hydrochloride for use in dental practice.
Eugenol is also used as a mouth wash after tooth extraction in combination with astringents. An antiseptic ointment of Eugenol with hydrous wool fat is used for eczema. It is administered in the same manner as oil of cloves in phthisis or as a carminative and antiseptic.
